What is Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program?

Ontario’s Home Renovation Savings Program is a provincial rebate program that supports energy efficient home upgrades, including solar panel installation. See more details here.  It’s designed to lower the upfront cost of a solar panel installation in Ontario without the need for a pre-energy assessment for certain upgrades.

Through HRSP, homeowners can receive up to $5,000 in rebates for installing eligible solar panels and up to $5,000 in battery energy storage systems, which helps lower installation costs by $10,000 while encouraging cleaner electricity generation at home. The program focuses on practical savings: You install approved equipment, meet the technical requirements, and receive rebates after installation and verification.

HRSP is built for homeowners who want results, not complexity. It supports grid connected systems that reduce reliance on utility power while improving energy resilience. By lowering upfront costs, the program shortens payback time and makes solar a more realistic option for more Ontario households.

Who is Eligible for HRSP Solar Rebates?

HRSP solar rebates are available to Ontario homeowners with eligible residential properties. Your home must be connected to the electricity grid, and the solar or battery system must meet program technical requirements.Equipment must be installed by qualified professionals, such as those available in the Solr Solvr network, and follow all electrical and safety standards. Only approved technologies qualify, and installations must be completed after program approval.Eligibility also depends on property type and system size. Reviewing requirements early helps avoid delays and ensures your project qualifies for available incentives.

Solar Energy Rebates in Ontario

Ontario offers rebates for both solar panels and battery systems, helping homeowners lower installation costs and improve energy control through the Home Renovation Savings Program.

Solar panels

A solar panel rebate in Ontario helps reduce the cost of installing grid connected solar systems. The rebate is based on system capacity and applies to eligible equipment that meets program standards. Please note that the solar array is set up to cover “displacement” only or the industry calls it "behind the meter”:  Solar power offsets home or business electricity usage only when the sun is shining, or if you are able to pull from energy storage, like home back up batteries.

Solar panels generate clean electricity for your home, lower monthly bills, and work with net metering to offset future energy use.

Battery energy storage

Battery rebates support the addition of energy storage to your solar system. Batteries store excess solar power for later use and avoid paying peak rate electricity charges, such as during evenings—making your clean energy investment payback faster. Importantly, it also provides back-up power during outages, which improves energy reliability and reduces reliance on the grid during peak hours. We recommend to homeowners to get further benefit from batteries by using grid electricity to power your building and to load the batteries for free from solar generation or at low rate periods, and then pull from the batteries during high peak rate periods–this is called "peak shaving" and can be programmed into your inverter automatically, for summer and winter hours.

How Do I Get Solar Energy Rebates in Ontario?

Start by contacting us to confirm your home and project qualify under HRSP. We assess your roof, energy use, and system size to make sure a "behind the meter" system makes sense for you. The good news is you do not need a pre-audit for solar and batteries for your household for the HRSP in 2026. Next, we help you choose a top-tier installer in your area to provide eligible solar panels or battery equipment that meets program standards, as well as submit the required application details before or during installation, depending on program rules.

Once installed, your installer will help you pass inspection and verification–including building permitting and ESA for electrical safety. After approval, rebates are issued based on eligible capacity and equipment. Proper documentation is critical, including invoices and system details.

Planning your project with rebate rules in mind helps you take the most from incentives. If you want help with eligibility, applications, or system planning, contact us for more information.
