Ontario Net Metering

Ontario Net Metering allows you to store the extra electricity your solar system as credits that it sends back to the grid. It lowers your power costs and makes your home more efficient. If you want to save on bills and use cleaner energy, net metering and solar power are great options.

What is Net Metering in Ontario?

Net metering in Ontario is a simple way to make your solar energy work for you. This means, when your solar panel installation in Ontario produces more power than you use, the extra energy goes back to the grid. Your utility gives you credits for that energy.  Later, when you need more power than your panels produce, you use those credits to reduce what you pay, and it holds them for up to 12 months.

This system lets you track the difference between what you send and what you take from the grid over time. You only pay for the net amount of electricity used. For many homes, net metering cuts bills because most excess energy is created in the day, and most use happens in the evening. To use net metering, you need to get a two-way bi-directional meter installed for your solar system sized for your home. Once set up, you start earning credits and lowering your bills.

Who is Eligible for Net Metering in Ontario?

Most homeowners and small businesses in Ontario can use net metering. To join, your solar system needs permitting to ensure it meets local utility requirements and connects safely to the power grid.

You need approval from your electricity provider and a bi-directional meter that tracks energy sent and received. Systems must be within size limits set by your local utility. If you rent or live in a condo, eligibility depends on who owns the meter.

We can help you build a net metering plan and check your situation and confirm if you qualify.

Benefits of Net Metering

Energy Credits

Extra power you generate turns into credits you can use later. This smooths out seasonal use.

Lower Electricity Bills

You pay only for what you use after credits, meaning your solar system lowers your monthly charges.

A Hedge Against Inflation & Increases

Net Metering for solar freezes electricity costs at your date of install, so inflation and increases are not affecting you. Credits are in kWh, or Kilo-watt-hours, so you are not impacted by price increases.

Improved House Value

Canadian estimates show that your house value gains 3-5% with a net metering solar system, versus a comparable house without solar.  This alone may cover the cost of your solar system (realized when you sell it).

Faster Payback

Earning credits speeds the time it takes for your system to pay for itself.

Energy Independence

You rely less on the grid. Your home runs more on your own solar energy.

Reduce Strain on the Grid

Your extra solar energy helps the grid handle peak demand. This supports local energy flow.

How Do I Start Generating Solar Energy?

First, we assess your roof, energy needs, your home’s sun exposure, roof condition, and current power use. Next, we help you choose the right solar system size and provide a quote. After that, we guide you in contacting your local utility to apply for net metering and get a bi-directional meter installed.

Once approved, your solar panel system goes live, starts generating energy and you begin earning credits when you send extra power back to the grid, which lowers future bills.
