What is Solar Power & Why Do I Need Solar Panels?

Solar power is a renewable energy source that harnesses the energy of the sun to generate electricity. By installing solar panels on your home, you can generate your own electricity and reduce your reliance on traditional energy sources.
Solar panels are an excellent investment for homeowners who want to save money on their energy bills and reduce their carbon footprint. They require little to no maintenance and can last up to 25 years or more.
To install solar panels on a home, there are a few requirements that must be met:

  • The home must receive adequate sunlight throughout the day.
  • The roof should be in good condition and able to support the weight of the solar panels.
  • The homeowner should have a clear understanding of their energy needs and goals for solar power.
  • Solar installations require adequate space. The average solar panel is 18 sq/ft in size to produce 400+ watts of power, which most roofs can support. However, depending on the roof and system size, some Ontario homeowners choose to install their solar system in the yard on a ground mount.

There are two main types of solar panels: Photovoltaic (PV) panels and thermal panels. PV panels are the most common type of solar panel used to generate electricity. On the other hand, thermal panels are used to heat water (or other fluid) and are typically used in conjunction with a traditional water heating system.

Suppose you are looking for the most cost-effective way to minimize monthly hydro bills, reduce carbon emissions, and access more power than ever. In that case, a new solar power system is the solution. You can contact an experienced advisor at Solr Solvr to learn more about your options.

Tesla Powerwall

A very popular brand of home battery is the Tesla Powerwall.  Solr Solvr can provide tailored solar-plus-battery solutions that allow you to harness the abundant power of the sun and reduce your dependence on fossil fuels. Powerwall – a rechargeable home battery system – will enable you to store the solar energy generated during the day and use it at night, allowing you to self-power your home and minimize your reliance on the utility grid.

Powerwall ensures an uninterrupted power supply with seamless and reliable backup power during outages. Similar to other ‘smart home’ batteries, the homeowner can stay informed through the Tesla mobile app.  You will have complete visibility and control over your self-powered home, giving you peace of mind that comes with knowing you're in control of your energy usage.

Solar Energy and Batteries

Many homeowners who invest in solar panel systems also consider including batteries for backup storage of electric power and for when the electricity grid goes down.  This is considered a backup, as most residents in Ontario are still connected to the grid when they go solar. Using the electric utility to store your excess power makes economic sense.

While they have come down in cost, batteries are still the most expensive part of the solar system, but their prices are coming down with new technology and with the growth of Electric Vehicles (EVs). However, some smart planning can help ensure you can add batteries when they become cost-effective. Our suggestion to many clients considering battery backup is to consider a “hybrid” inverter that will allow them to connect batteries later on when they are more affordable.

The different types of batteries that we recommend are Lithium Ion, and better for Canadian winters, LiFePo (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries—they are the best value for the life of the battery, easily maintained, light-weight and can be drawn down to 10% with no reduction in capacity over time. Some homeowners still add AGM (absorbent glass mat) or Gel batteries that are lower in price and fairly low maintenance, however, they can only be drawn down to 50%. Therefore, you need to double your capacity for the same backup power.

It is also worthwhile to consider a home battery system that has all components, including a battery management system or BMS encased in one box. Some well-known brands are the Tesla Powerwall and the LG Home Energy Storage System

Currently, solar energy storage with batteries is becoming increasingly popular as a means of backup power or to provide electricity when the grid is down. The use of batteries allows for the storage of excess solar energy generated during the day, which can be used at night or during times of low sunlight. This ensures a constant supply of electricity, even during power outages.

Longer term, the ultimate goal of solar energy is to move off-grid entirely and eventually cut ties with electrical companies. This would allow for complete energy independence and a reduction in reliance on fossil fuels, and remove the fixed fee we pay for connection and distribution costs–providing an even higher ROI.

With the advancements in solar technology and battery storage, it is becoming more feasible for households to generate their own electricity and become self-sufficient. This not only benefits the environment but it can also lead to significant cost savings in the long run.

Price to Install a New Solar Power System

How Much Will A Solar Panel System Installation Cost?

In Ontario, solar panel systems typically cost between $2.50 and $3.00 per watt, depending on several factors. For example, a 5kW to 7kW solar panel system can cost between $13,000 to $21,000 before tax and rebates. That being said, the government rebates currently available can reduce this cost significantly. Most residential 5kW systems would be eligible for $5,000 in rebates, bringing the range down to $8,000 to $16,000 before tax which is a much more enticing price for a system that will pay for itself in time. When you work with Solr Solvr, the average solar system costs our clients $2.52 per watt., To ensure you get the best price for a high-quality solar system installed by experts, we present you with three competitive bids.

It is worth noting that the final cost of a solar panel system installation depends on several factors, including the solar system size, the quality of the equipment and installation, and the home's location. Other factors affecting the final cost include the type of solar panels used, the mounting system, and the inverter. The cost of permits and inspections and the cost of connecting the system to the grid can also affect the final cost of a solar panel system installation. What ROI can I expect from my solar panels?

Investing in solar provides energy savings and increases the value of your home, making it a wise long-term investment. In Ontario, the average payback period for a residential solar system is between 7 to 10 years once all costs, including potential maintenance, are factored in. If you plan to sell your home after the payback period, you can expect an even greater return on investment. In fact, for every 1kW of solar installed, the value of your home could increase by up to $3,000 to $5,000 per watt, resulting in a 3 to 4% increase for an average-sized home. That alone will pay for the solar panel system when you sell your home!
