Some homeowners still add AGM (absorbent glass mat) or Gel batteries that are lower in price and fairly low maintenance, however, they can only be drawn down to 50%. Therefore, you need to double your capacity for the same backup power. 

It is also worthwhile to consider a home battery system that has all components, including a battery management system or BMS encased in one box. Some well-known brands are the Tesla Powerwall and the LG Home Energy Storage System

Currently, solar energy storage with batteries is becoming increasingly popular as a means of backup power or to provide electricity when the grid is down. The use of batteries allows for the storage of excess solar energy generated during the day, which can be used at night or during times of low sunlight. This ensures a constant supply of electricity, even during power outages.

For example, a 5kW to 7kW solar panel system can cost between $13,000 to $21,000 before tax and rebates. That being said, the government rebates currently available can reduce this cost significantly. Most residential 5kW systems would be eligible for $5,000 in rebates, bringing the range down to $8,000 to $16,000 before tax which is a much more enticing price for a system that will pay for itself in time. Solar Energy Government Incentives for Ontario

Ontario's Federal Greener Homes Program can help homeowners afford solar energy through the Canada Greener Homes Grant and Loan programs. Homeowners who want to make energy-efficient upgrades to their homes can receive up to $10,000 in grants through the Home Efficiency Rebate Plus (HER+) program. A grant of up to $5,000 can help cover the cost of installing solar panels on a home.

In addition to the grant, the Canada Greener Homes Loan program offers 0% interest financing of up to $40,000 to homeowners who have an active application for the HER+ grant application.
